Bathroom and Closet Declutter – One Room Challenge Week 2

The Purge

It’s week 2 of this exciting adventure and what have we done? Not much honestly, just clearing all our stuff out!

You would think it would be pretty easy; just grab a couple of bags and totes and throw that shit in there. But no, somehow when you are organizing, junk multiplies and has more junk babies, it’s never-ending.

So the goal for this week was to clear everything out from our bathroom and closet to be able to start demo work. We also decided to move into our guest room so that us and the baby don’t have to sleep right next to the work zone.

The Itty Bitty Closet Committee

We also wanted to take advantage and really purge our stuff. Give away rarely used items, throw out or repurpose old and damaged items, recycle and dump expired bottles and products – well you get the point. Do the environmentally right thing to do, and try to minimize and simplify our way of living.

Let’s be honest, sometimes we have way more than what we need. And having piles of stuff just sitting there going bad – I’m over it. I’m looking at you, really good deal dress that I bought in a sale 4 years ago and never found the occasion to wear!

So we ended up grabbing some bags and boxes and labeling them:

  • A for stuff that belongs in other rooms.
  • B for giving away.
  • C for storage.
  • D for trash/recycle.

We took everything out of the closet and moved some stuff to the guest room and the rest hung on a clothes rack that we purchased. Between that and the laundry waiting to be done the room looked like our closet exploded exorcism style into our bedroom.

The Bathroom AKA The Latrine from your 80’s Nightmare

After we sorted and cleared out the closet we moved to the bathroom. We used the same approach here (with the bags) and moved our daily use items to our main bathroom.

Upon clearing the bathroom we confirmed we needed more storage space and so a bigger vanity with more storage and better use of vertical space will help a lot with all our (my) stuff. Thanks, fabfitfun for my endless skincare supply.

That’s it for our 2-week update on the one-room challenge! What did we learn from this week? We Do Not Need all this crap in our homes! I’m over the clutter, over the trendy shit, and ready to evolve with my bathroom/closet space.

Did this process take longer than expected? Yes. Was it tedious and groan-inducing? Yes. But you know what, all this organizing and decluttering will really help us to start off on the right foot in our new bathroom when it comes to maintaining the organization of the space and we are here for it!

Check out week 1 If you missed last week’s post and would like to know what our plans for this space are and our hopes for the outcome (or the rest of the handy links below). Now head on over to the One Room Challenge website and see how the feature designers and the rest of the guest participants are doing with their space.
