Master Bath DIY Reno – One Room Challenge Week 1

It’s happening! It’s finally happening! We are remodeling our master bathroom! And it only took us 5 years, a lot of saving, planning, and staring at the puke color pink walls over the many years of taking dumps. But our sledgehammers are in hand and we will show no mercy as we take out our frustrations on those walls reminiscent of the slime river from Ghostbuster’s 2. Shall we continue? (I have never been so psyched to write a post before). Let us show you what travesty we’re dealing with in this Master Bath DIY Reno – One Room Challenge Week 1.

But before we dive into this horror story (hopefully fairytale), you might be asking, what is this One Room Challenge you speak of? Many of you reading already know, but if you are like us and this is a totally new thing, here is the gist. This awesome event is where many talented designers and DIYers get together and chose one space to revamp and bring back to life in the course of 8 weeks. So yeah, many thanks to all the people responsible for creating this event! We will be sharing our progress every week during the event. This year Better Homes & Gardens is the media sponsor for the One Room Challenge event.

Now back to the bathroom…

The What and Why

They say a picture is worth more than a thousand words, so see for yourself why this bathroom has to go!

First, let’s start with the textured wall. Ugh, why tho??!! If you know me and have read the post about the basement then you know I am done with this finish on the walls. Like, I get it. That was in style at some point but one place in the house is more than enough. Not to mention it looks like someone did a very bad job mudding drywall, said screw it, and smeared that joint compound like it was shit, all over the place. Who let that become a thing? Who?! I need a word with them.

Then we have the pink tile. Look guys, I have nothing against pink tile (Rock The Block contestants David Bromstad and Tiffany Brooks did an amazing job using pink in various places including the tile in the basement bathroom; divine-cover me in all that tile and call me a bathroom floor). But this public pool tile shenanigan’s- girrrrl.

Don’t get me started on the odd shape which affects our already small closet rendering it completely dysfunctional. You can barely fit anything in there and you gotta shimmy to be able to get in and out. I don’t know about you but I got a booty. A Dominican booty. Need I say more?

Ohhh and that shower stall, its to die for… literally!

Sooo …needless to say I was ecstatic to use this one room challenge event to get this project going.

Now, we will attempt to DIY most -if not all of this reno and share along these 8 weeks, our wins and losses and experiences on this path to our dream bathroom. Who is the “we” I’m talking about? We work as a team in most things DIY, my husband Ernesto, Erica- my sis in law and partner on this blog, and my bro in law, Joel (Erica’s Husband- Ernesto’s brother). Not to mention other extended family members. Because in this family the work ethic goes deep and the tequila flows strong.

The Plan

First stop on this Master Bath DIY Reno – One Room Challenge Week 1, Planning. We started by following our guide on how to plan for a project to get this baby going. We have an equally small footprint and budget so we had to work within that space and avoid moving too many plumbing fixtures or walls around.

New floorplan with master bathroom included with the new entrance and sneak peek of the layout of our bedroom.

As you can see we measured our space a drew up our floorplan. We decided to take some space from the south wall of the bathroom to be able to square out the footprint. I hear you, I hear you! Why would you take more space from an already small bathroom, if you are complaining about the size in the first place? Easy, it’s just not functional. By making it smaller and rearranging the layout we can actually maximize the space and even get more square footage for the closet, which God knows we desperately need! Thus we get the best of both worlds. Come on, don’t act like you haven’t heard the adage “It’s not the size that matters, it’s what you do with it.”

We will be closing the actual entrance (located on the west wall) and moving it to the closet’s north wall. So now the new entry will be through the closet. This will allow us to move the vanity to that west wall. The rest of the space stays pretty much the same but gets a major upgrade. This will help us keep the cost down.

The Inspiration

We wanted a clean, refreshing pallet so we went with a monochromatic color scheme of black, gray, and white and added some light wood tones to warm it up. Then we’ll liven the room up with pops of color with decor pieces (towels, baskets, artwork, decor on the vanity, etc).

Keeping in mind that our home has a blend of various styles. Coastal (for the colors), industrial (hardware and metals), rustic/farmhouse (furniture style and some decor pieces), just to mention a few. It was important to us to bring in a little of each of those elements so that it feels cohesive throughout our home and is true to our style.

And that is it for our plan for our master bath remodel. Make sure you check out the other participant’s spaces and plans here. We sure cant wait to see everyone else’s ideas!

That’s all for the One Room Challenge Week 1 – Master Bath DIY Reno! We hope after reading this you are as excited as we are to embark on this journey. And like us can’t wait to see what will come next.

Stay tuned for next week where we will purge and clear out our space. We will also share some tips on how to organize as well!
