The Reveal – One Room Challenge

It’s finally here, the reveal day of The One Room Challenge Spring 2021. Can ya’ll believe it? 8 weeks have passed, full of planning and calculating, late nights and a lot of sanding, sweat, and wine, and a whole lot of teamwork.

Gotta say it has been one hell of an experience. We learned so much, but above all, we learned to not give up until the very end. And even then still keep on going!

Despite all our efforts we regret to say we didn’t make it in time. We still had some tasks left undone. Nothing would please us more than to be able to share some magazine-worthy pictures of our master bath. But the reality is we still have some work left to be done.

Instead we will list what is left on our to-do list and describe our vision of what our bathroom was supposed to look and function at the end of this One Room Challenge.

The Vision

Bringing you back to the mood board, our vision was a bright, modern, and relaxing spa-like bathroom. Overall we were looking for a functional but beautiful master bath with lots of storage for a growing family.

The Function Behind The Choices!

We wanted to make the space feel bigger so we opted for light walls. But also wanted to add interest and show off the pretty tile, so we used a medium-tone grout. We decided on dark floors because it was more low maintenance as it hides more the dirt and ‘hairs’. Yes, apparently we seem to be a family of wolves because of constant hairs all over the place as if we were shedding.

Also, wanted to warm up the space with some natural wood tones thus the vanity, rug, and stool carried this task perfectly. Pulling also that warmth from the accent tile, which featured all these tones beautifully.

Upgraded from one sink to a double sink vanity with more storage. Added even more storage behind the mirrors by creating a 18×36 inches niche turning into a sort of DIY recessed medicine cabinet.

Saved space using a coat rack as a towel rack. Because let’s be honest, we won’t be the only ones bathing in this retreat. Hiding? Maybe, but our little ones for sure will be creating a lot of ‘memories’ here. So long story short we need space for their towels as well.

We swaped our old jetted tub for a smaller free standing tub and made our tiny shower a bigger walk in shower.

Adding storage space also in the ‘wet’ areas by building niches. A big one above the tub and 2 smaller his and hers in the shower stall. This would allow us to have our everyday use items within reach.

For lighting we chose 3 sconces to distribute between the mirrors covering our task lighting needs.

Tip on lighting: The best lighting is at eye level, not overhead, which creates shadows. The best light is diffused light from a white or off white lamp shade. This type of light tends to be more flattering and all-around better when applying makeup or working with your face. Keep this in mind when selecting what type of task lighting you will need for your project!

All that we had left to add to this design are the decor pieces we will use. And again the idea is simple and beautiful. So our pieces have to cover the two conditions of being beautiful yet functional.

All of these changes in the footprint made it possible for us to have a slightly bigger closet. So that is a huge win for us, but this challenge is not about the closet, we’ll tackle this space another time.

And now the moment you’ve been waiting for, the pictures!

As you can see we are missing:

  • Lights
  • Shelving in the niches
  • Mortar bed
  • Tile (walls and floor)
  • Install ALL the fixtures
  • Paint
  • Mirrors

The Reveal

So here it is! This is our reveal. We reveal the team behind it all. The hard work, effort, and love that we put into this reno that became the family project.

Even though we are not done and are still working on this space we wanted to keep being a part of this One Room Challenge and do a reveal along with everyone else. We have a core belief in our family (imparted to us by our MIL), and it’s “Dios nos purifica con la espera”. And as we approached the end of this challenge and felt the anxiety that we weren’t even close to being done, we were reminded of those words. It means that with the wait God purifies that of which we are waiting, praying, and in this case working for. And the longer the wait the more blessed and pure is that blessing for you (for more on this go here).

In our case I can see also that with that wait, we got to spend more time together as a family, learned new skills, the cousins played more, the brothers and sisters-in-laws bonded more, so we take that as a win in our books.

So if you want to see us making more memories and working together to finish this bathroom and, you are curious to see how this baby turns out just follow us along on IG @made.in.casita. You can also check back here and get all the sweet details on how completely DIY-ed this master bath is.

Inspiring right? You’re welcome, that’s what we are all about here. Now, let’s go celebrate and enjoy all those who were able to finish their space in time! Like our fellow featured designers and the rest of the guest participants! Come with us and enjoy the amazing spaces they created!
